“The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It’s people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages” - Banksy.

This, is the epitome of Banksy.

For someone that the general public knows so little about - it’s undeniable that his work speaks for himself.  Now this doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good or bad.

There’s plenty of debate about that - some argue overrated others argue genius.

But you can’t argue against, is that all of his work generates plenty of debate and that’s exactly what we need art to be doing.  It’s no surprise that Banksy’s work has strong relations to political fuck ups and consumer habits because at this day and age it seems we take everything as dished out to us all too much - from every form of way we can absorb.

How many artists can you honestly describe as ‘thought provoking’ in a way that summons us to question our day to day life happenings and occurances not just on a personal level but on a behavioural level as well?

Simple ideas are usually the most effective - it’s no different from the above works.  Ofcourse everyone is entitled to opinions - but you can’t turn around and say that an artist that, time and time again, causes debate doesn’t provoke thoughts of our current way of living when we read:

“Sorry the lifestyle you ordered is currently out of stock”

Such a good Banksy quote. And if you’re rocking a Banksy tee, or sitting at Hibachi with me talking to your bros about Banksy’s new work, and all you talk about is how creative his composition is without two words on the topic it brings up, and then your next sentence is about how ‘gay’ your friend next to you is, you’re the problem.

Dear laxbros that I got stuck at a table with “Sorry, the lifestyle you ordered is currently out of stock”.

Lupe Fiasco- Around My Way [Freedom Ain’t Free]

I can play that T.R.O.Y. beat on sax!

So idk how I never really thought about this but, Lupe has zero flow. Like zero. He’s talented, lyrically. Which is what he’s known for i guess.. And maybe his square flow helps get his message across more directly.

I have mad respect for his content. But i would definitely appreciate some syncopation, triplets, or use of on and off beats. Like damn now that I think about it, that’s probs why I’ve found some of his new tracks so hard to get into.

And if you think flow is irrelevant, It’s the only reason Biggie could be considered to be on the same level as Pac. (and I guess vice versa with 2Pac’s lyrics). And Lupe isn’t super poetic (Daydream was hot) so I feel like he relies a lot on content and fat beats. But there’s nothing wrong with that in my mind. Idk why it took me so long to realize it tho…

Lemme know if I missed somethin

“Most people think the ‘Untitled’ video was about sex, but my direction was completely opposite of that. It was about his grandmother’s cooking.”- Paul Hunter, Director of the D’Angelo’s ‘How Does it Feel’ video.

Hunter is quick to explain that he, like D, was raised in the Pentecostal church.
“When I used to sing in the choir,” Hunter says, “after the rehearsal, you go in to eat. I remembered seeing the preacher looking at a lady’s skirt one week and then, the next Sunday, talking about how fornication is wrong.” Such mixed messages about the pleasures of the flesh were intertwined with the pleasures of the palate—part of the same sensual stew. “So I was like, ‘Think of your grandmother’s greens, how it smelled in the kitchen. What did the yams and fried chicken taste like? That’s what I want you to express.’ “

From The Return of D’Angelo article in GQ: http://www.gq.com/entertainment/music/201206/dangelo-gq-june-2012-interview?printable=true

While I appreciate the article, GQ is still too much of all the things I dislike about society

And if you only know this one song by D’Angelo, please educate yourself:

One mo gin

Spanish Joint

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPUmnAjp5h8

In part, I feel like D’Angelo’s fall can be loosely explained with a famously disputed Lauryn Hill quote… think about it. I’d say it’s the number one cause of the misrepresentation of black artists and their message in the media.

FUCK GLEE. These cats from Howard U do workkk. What is the point of square mashups and, minus a few folks with talent, mediocre singing when groups like this exist?

People get all tight when I say the show GLEE SUCKS. I can’t help it if i find it hokey as fuck.

You can like what you like, but that doesn’t mean I have to just cuz everyone else does.

“Dr. King’s policy was that non-violence would achieve the gains for black people in the United States. His main assumption was that if you were non-violent, if you suffer, your opponent will see your suffering and will be moved to change his heart. That’s very good. He only made one fallacious assumption. In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience.” -Stokley Carmichael

This is the most obvious thing in the world, but I never thought about it that way until now. Yet another reason for me to question non-violence in certain contexts…

People who think that no one uses welfare/food stamps to actually buy things they need can tell that to my hungry 11 year old self who wouldn’t have had decent lunches or meat (at all) without government assistance.

Oh, and who might have gone hungry if there had been drug testing involved. Thanks. I’m glad that you know more about my life than I do! If only I had realized sooner that my mom wasn’t really buying food with that money! I mean, I don’t know what she was doing with it, since our lives were fucking awful at that point and we had a grand total of zero luxuries (I shared a room with my mom! In the basement of my grandma’s condo! I did laundry for the whole house to earn enough dimes to buy myself sodas and candy!), but really, please, enlighten me.

Also, as a child of a drug addict, this law fucking terrifies me. The idea that some kid who is trying to cope with having an addict for a parent (not always easy) also might go hungry or without new clothes or whatnot because some privileged assholes think poor people have to be suffering saints to qualify for help literally makes me cry to think about.

The stories we could share, grew up in Brooklyn my mom was one of those welfare queens that evil fuck Reagan was talking abt (minus the cadillac and crown). The joyous stories of standing in lunch lines at the homeless shelter and digging thru garbage for bottles to recycle. Less than 10 years old.

I want an ethnic baby

karnythia:

nuestrahermana:

This white woman on TV just said about her adopted daughter:

“I adopted her from Colombia. It was like ordering from a catalog I got exactly what I wanted. I used to call her Zoey Jean my little Colombian coffee bean.”

And yet people ask me why I don’t think kids of color are always better off being adopted by white people. OMFG.

My thoughts are always “What makes you think you know anything about what it takes to raise a child of color in America? How could you teach it the things it will need to know to get by?” You are far less concerned about the safety of that child and it’s mental well being than your idea of having a nice lil charity baby. Sure their life may be ‘better’ if they are coming from a place of poverty or even starvation (don’t get me started), but the ignorance of some people thinking that it’s cool just to assimilate them into white society is a problem.

I once though it would be nice to adopt a child from every country. I was probably no older than 13. Growing up as a POC in the white suburbs, at that age I knew very little about the complexities and the struggles surrounding my race, much less those of various other backgrounds. Basically I was white-upholding as fuck.

One day I may have the privilege to be a foster parent or even adopt a child. The children I care for could be a different race than I am. While I may not know everything about their ethnic background, I would for sure do my research, make sure they understood the importance of their race in this society, let them define themselves in relation to their heritage, and I for DAMN sure would not belittle their culture by relating them to foods from their home; just to name a few.

You Should Watch This, This Is Funny of the Day: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em — in a new, Seinfeldian comedy sketch released by Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, he pokes fun at his exasperation with Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker and his superhero exploits. But when Mitt Romney calls, there’s one situation for which Booker isn’t prepared…

[playbook]

eh pretty funny. But the Mitt Romney ending… vom.

In other news, why do I feel like Chris Christie doesn’t care about black people unless they’re not poor

In other news, why do I feel like Cory Booker cares more about media attention than poor black people

Don’t care if it’s bipartisan. It sure the fuck isn’t shocking or groundbreaking that Mayor Booker is hamming it up with the same fucker that cut buttloads of money from after school programs for kids it Newark just last year.

It’s nbd tho. It’s a funny vid. Happy to see at least some folks can work together on something.
